Safety Director

Waters Construction Company is a multi-divisional construction company performing services in both the private and public sectors since 1960. Waters Construction specializes in site work, heavy civil, environmental remediation and Paving.

Waters Construction Company is looking for an energetic, creative, passionate and highly ethical construction professional to lead our safety division. The position will report directly to the Owner/President.

A safety director will be responsible for understanding all aspects of Waters’ safety policies including all OSHA standards. Orchestration safety protocol of multiple heavy, paving and site projects. This candidate will have 5 years of progressive experience in the heavy civil field. Must have experience in field inspections, tools box talks, and weekly inspections, as well as accident reporting and investigation. Other important duties will include managing the safety budget, follow up of claims, keeping tabs on workman’s compensation, and maintenance of new and updated policies. This position will manage, train and monitor other safety personal.  Most importantly keeps Waters’ employees as their #1 priority.

Projects vary in size from one million to 20 million dollars. Waters Construction works both as a sub-contractor and general contractor in the heavy civil, mass transit and highway market. Safety is an integral piece of continuing waters’ success.

The safety Directorr will perform the following activities

  1. Understands all aspects of Waters safety policy including all OSHA standards.
  2. Does safety introduction for all new employees
  3. Has a college degree in safety or an equivalent amount of field experience.
  4. Does field inspections of company projects
  5. Informs superintendents when employees and/or subcontractors have violated safety policies.
  6. Manages and enforces the submittal by superintendents of tool box talks and weekly inspection sheets.
  7. Can fill out accident report investigation and insures timely submission of all information to insurer.
  8. Builds good but professional working relationship with employees and subcontractors
  9. Begins to understand construction activities and helps superintendents plan for the safe execution of future activities
  10. Can perform inspection of garage
  11. Performs on road inspections of Waters vehicles, and performs automobile accident investigation.
  12. Keeps the safety ofWaters employees as his #1 priority
  13. Will write and manage the revisions and additions to Waters’s safety policy.
  14. Will write and manage yearly company safety meeting.
  15. Analyzes field inspection reports to check for non compliance patterns within the company
  16. Manages purchases and budgets for safety equipment
  17. Follows accidents claims and works closely with insurer to minimize financial impact of claim
  18. Fully understands construction activities and is an active planner of the safety requirements for future activities
  19. Is qualified to serve as an environmental inspector on both contaminated and controlled excavation sites.
  20. Implements, designs and monitors light duty assignments for recently injured employees
  21. Focuses superintendents on the protection of Waters and third party property affected by projects
  22. Participates in driver selection for Waters owned vehicles
  23. Writes and manages Waters safe driver policies
  24. Monitors compliance with certificate of insurance submittals by subcontractors and truckers
  25. Co-ordinates Waters safety policies on wrap-up programs with appropriate OCIP insurer.
  26. Has continued his specialty education in construction safety and is qualified to officially train Waters employees in various accident prevention techniques such as but not limited to: confined space entry, flagging, scaffold erection, competent person for trenching and excavation, fall protection etc.
  27. Manages, trains and monitors superintendents not only for worker accident prevention but also for third party liability and theft.
  28. Consistently keeps Waters workman’s compensation ratio bellow .85,general liability loss ratio below .4 and automobile loss ratio bellow .4
  29. Keeps the safety of all workers, the public and property on any Waters Construction work sites as his # 1 priority.
  30. Establishes good working relationship with other managers and is part of the management team
  31. Is perceived as a leader by all field personnel and resolves all disciplinary matters independently of upper management.
  32. Will write and manage the revisions and additions to Waters’s pollution prevention policies.
  33. Monitors and manages pollution prevention policies
  34. Is qualified to write HASP plans
  35. Fully understands the financial impact of insurance costs for both workman’s compensation and general liability.
  36. Has continued his education to include various courses in risk management and insurance costs.
  37. With the assistance of the controller negotiates insurance policy renewals with agents and insurers.
  38. Implements, monitors and manages Waters insurance deductibles and self insurance to minimize insurance costs and maximize the financial impact of Waters safety policies investments
  39. Creates and manages entire safety budget and insures that budgets are not exceeded
  40. Monitors loss reserves by insurers and manages them proactively. Participates in loss studies with insurers with the goal of loss ratio reduction.
  41. Does four-month-after-expiration claim reviews to insure lowest possible influence on workman’s compensation ratio.
  42. Consistently keeps Waters’s workman’s compensation ratio below .80 and general liability loss ratio below .3 and automobile loss ratio below .3
  43. Has a significant impact on Waters financial bottom line
